'Batman: Caped Crusader' Animated Series Picked Up by Amazon for 2 Seasons
The animated series that comes from Matt Reeves and J.J. Abrams was shopped around after being scrapped by HBO Max with Netflix, Apple and Hulu also playing around with the idea of housing the DC-comics project; however, Amazon came out as the winner.
In addition to Abrams and Reeves producing, Bruce Timm, who is best known for helming the iconic Batman: The Animated Series is on to write and develop the project. Warner Bros. Discovery sold the series to a streaming adversary in effort to monetize their content, selling their projects to a third party.
Batman: Caped Crusader is said to be a respected and spiritual sequel in a way to Timm's 1990 animated series, which stands the test of time as one of the highest regarded animated shows of all-time. Comic book writer Ed Brubaker has also been announced as a member of the creative team, running the writers room and serving as Timm's second-in-command for Caped Crusader following the shows original announcement back in May 2021.
It seems to be a curious move for Batman: Caped Crusader to head to Amazon as WBD CEO David Zaslav has emphasized major franchises on their streamer, however, they're trying to offset costs and animation has been an unfortunate casualty for most streaming services. Additionally, James Gunn, one of the heads of DC Studios, has now put forth a major confusion for casual fans in regard to just how many on-screen Batman portrayals are active. Matt Reeves has his BatVerse in motion with Pattinson donning the cowl and spinoff series, The Penguin centering around Colin Farrell's character currently filming. There's also The Flash which hits theaters this July and features the return of both Michael Keaton's Batman as well as Ben Affleck's. Having trouble keeping up? Then you probably also weren't aware of Gunn developing a completely separate movie, The Brave and the Bold centering around yet ANOTHER Bruce Wayne teaming with his son, Damian Wayne aka Robin for his current Gods and Monsters universe.
Having said that, this features another high-profile franchise moving forward for Amazon to pair with The Rings of Power, The Boys and The Terminal List at the streamer. Additionally, they've garnered a nice animated slate as well with The Boys: Diabolical, The Legend of Vox Machina and Invincible.
