Quentin Tarantino Seemingly Set on His Last Feature, will Direct 'The Movie Critic' with Production Slated for Fall
While full details of the script are under wraps, it seems that the story will be set in the late 1970s in Los Angeles, revolving around a female film critic. Tarantino has long said that he would direct 10 films and then retire from movie making; The Movie Critic would be his 10th film in his filmography following 2019's Once Upon a Time in Hollywood which netted 2 Academy Awards from 10 total nominations. While The Movie Critic does not have a distributor as of now, it is expected to go out to buyers as early as this week.
THR speculates that the story could revolve around Pauline Kael, one of the most influential movie critics of all-time who passed away in 2001. Kael was not only a film critic, but also an essayist and novelist who had fought tooth and nail against editors and filmmakers during the 1970s. It was in the late-70s that Kael had a very brief job working as a consultant for Paramount which she accepted at the request of Warren Beatty. The timing of that position as well as Tarantino's deep love and appreciation for Kael could mean that THR is onto something when it comes to a potential subject that the film is based on.
Tarantino has been able to garner incredible on-screen and below the line talent for decades now. He's worked with Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt, Samuel L. Jackson, Robert De Niro, Pam Grier, Uma Thurman, Al Pacino, Margot Robbie, Michael Fassbender, Michael Keaton and damn near made Christoph Waltz career. He is one of the most beloved auteurs of the movie business, a resident cinephile and a true historian of film. It's nice to see him go out on top the way he intended.
