Andy
Muschietti has been one of the hottest names in Hollywood since his box-office
smash hit remake of It just last
year. Now, he’s attached to yet another property to adapt. According to Variety, Muschietti will direct the
adaptation of Attack on Titan for
Warner Bros.
The
manga series of the same name is one of the best-selling and most popular of
its genre having sold over 76 million copies in print since it debuted in 2009.
Attack on Titan is set within a world
in which humanity lives in cities which are surrounded by walls that protect
them from enormous humanoids that are referred to as titans, hence the title. Attack on Titan has been adapted in
Japan back in 2015 by Shinji Higuchi, to which the two-part film earned $46
million dollars.
Muschietti
made his directorial debut in 2013 with the horror film, Mama starring Jessica Chastain and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau. His
adaptation of It based on the popular
Stephen King novel became the highest-grossing horror film ever making $700
million worldwide. He’s currently in production on the sequel, It: Chapter Two, which will bring back
all the young children from the Losers Club as well as their adult counterparts.
It: Chapter Two will hit theaters on
September 6th, 2019.
Going
back to Attack on Titan, I think this
is an awesome property to adapt. I’ve never read the manga or seen the Japanese
film, but the story seems interesting enough and I’m excited to see what
Muschietti can do with it. He seems to be really interested in sci-fi as a
genre as he also has his version of Robotech
in development.
