Here’s a
wild story for you. Just months after being fired off Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 for insensitive tweets back in 2012,
DC and Warner Bros. have stolen Disney’s once-loved golden boy. According to
multiple outlets, James Gunn who directed the previous two Guardians efforts has signed on to write and direct, Suicide Squad 2.
The Hollywood Reporter says that the
movie, originally set to be written and directed by Gavin O’Connor will be a “brand
new take” on the DC property. Every few weeks it seems that news like this is
being given out though, so we’ll take it with a grain of salt. The report does
mention however, that characters from the first incarnation by David Ayer such
as Deadshot, Harley Quinn, Captain Boomerang, Killer Croc and Joker could be
featured but there is no indication that all the original actors if any will
return for the respective roles.
Collider also talked about why O’Connor
departed as Variety’s Justin Kroll
pointed out in a tweet that his take on Suicide
Squad 2 was very similar to the Birds
of Prey story that is currently in pre-production so when the studio told
him to change the script he grew angry and left to do Torrance starring Ben Affleck who also used to be a part of the
DCEU.
I think
Gunn is a fantastic choice to take on the mantle of an ensemble comic book romp
such as this with his amazing work with the Guardians
films. What do you guys think? Would you rather have seen Gavin O’Connor’s take
or are you excited to see Gunn at the helm? Comment below and let us know!
