One
of, if not, arguably the best actor in Hollywood’s history is retiring from
acting. According to Variety,
3-time Oscar winner, Daniel Day-Lewis is set to retire. This was learned as a
statement was obtained from his publicist, Leslee Dart.
“Daniel
Day-Lewis will no longer be working as an actor. He is immensely grateful
to all of his collaborators and audiences over the many years. This is a
private decision and neither he nor his representatives will make any
further comment on this subject.”
It’s
not a huge surprise for me that Day-Lewis is leaving the business as he’s just
as method of an actor as you can ever have. He’s also 60-years old and while
other actors like Robert De Niro, Al Pacino and Morgan Freeman are later in their
70’s, they clearly don’t commit themselves so much to a role as Day-Lewis.
He’s
won three Best Actor Oscars for his leading roles in My Left Foot, There Will Be Blood and Lincoln and also was nominated for In the Name of the Father and Gangs
of New York. He’s expected to be back in the awards race in the Fall with
Paul Thomas Anderson’s next movie, Phantom
Thread, which will be Day-Lewis’ last. He plays a dressmaker who’s
commissioned to design frocks for members of high society and the royal family
in 1950’s London. Phantom Thread will
open on Christmas Day.
We
wish Daniel Day-Lewis the best in his post-acting life. We expect him to spend
plenty of time with his three children and writer/director wife, Rebecca
Miller. Thank you, Mr. Day-Lewis for your amazing talents and dedication to the
craft over the years.
