since Gillian Flynn’s Gone Girl was
released, Hollywood has been clamoring to get their hands on more of her
material. After many months of talks and more, it was Marti Noxon, the
co-creator of UnREAL and writer of Mad Men and Buffy the Vampire Slayer who thought that Flynn’s debut novel, Sharp Objects would work better as a TV
series rather than a film. The project took off after that and has Amy Adams in
the lead role.
Sharp Objects follows a reporter coming
out of a stay in a psych ward who returns to her hometown to cover the murder
of two young girls. It sounds like powerful stuff and an awesome role for Adams
to take on. She’ll also be working with Jean-Marc Vallee (Dallas Buyers Club, Wild) who will direct the whole series. This
won’t be his first time doing something with HBO either as the upcoming Big Little Lies was executively produced
by Vallee and he directed the first two episodes. Unfortunately, with Sharp Objects going into production
soon, we learned that the other collaboration between the director and star of
the series that was planned, the Janis Joplin biopic would be scrapped. It’s unfortunate
because Adams would be perfect in the role. There are still plans though for
another Janis Joplin biopic as Michelle Williams is set to play the musician for
Sean Durkin (Martha Marcy May Marlene).
Adams
had a huge 2016 starring in two critical darlings, Arrival and Nocturnal Animals.
She’s garnering awards buzz for both roles but I believe she’ll get nominated
for her 6th Oscar for her role as Dr. Louise Banks in Arrival. She also reprised her role as
Lois Lane in Batman v. Superman: Dawn of
Justice and is only scheduled to be in Justice
League for this year. Sharp Objects
should be released in the beginning of 2018 on HBO.
