With
all the recent remakes and rehashes in Hollywood it was only a matter of time
that we would see the industry diving into 90s sports films. According to Slash
Film, there is a remake underway for the 1992 sports comedy, White Men Can’t Jump.
The
original film was one of the best comedies of the decade and was written and
directed by Ron Shelton (Bull Durham,
Cobb) who was the king of sports films. The movie followed Woody Harrelson and
Wesley Snipes as two street hustling basketball players who work together to
double their money instead of trying to take it from each other. Black-ish creator Kenya Barris is set to
produce and write the modern take on the story. Professional athletes Blake
Griffin and Ryan Kalil are also set to produce with their new production
company Mortal Media.
I’m a
huge fan of the original movie but I’m also worried about how this will turn
out. The biggest thing of this film will hinge on who are cast in the lead
roles to replace Harrelson and Snipes. With a talent like Barris involved you
need to hope that he can bring together the project quickly with the right
people involved.
