We reported back in August that David Fincher (The Social Network, Gone Girl) was in talks to direct the sequel to World War Z but now, there is confirmation that he will in fact be helming the zombie sequel per Variety. It’s been quite a while since we’ve seen anything from the mind of Fincher as the auteur was working on not one, but two series for HBO, but both were dropped.

World War Z was released in 2013 and is probably best known for its troubled production that included re-shoots of almost the entire third act. The movie then made over $500 million worldwide and ever since then, the studio has been adamant about getting the franchise jumpstarted again with a sequel. With Fincher coming on to direct, it will reteam him with Brad Pitt who he’s previously directed in three of his movies: Fight Club, Seven and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. It sure is a huge franchise Viagra so to speak to grab someone with Fincher’s talents in time to get this movie prepped for a likely 2019 release.

Fincher’s upcoming serial killer show Mindhunter will debut on Netflix later this year but as of now he has a clear schedule to film WWZ2. Pitt is getting ready to film the sci-fi drama, Ad Astra so hopefully this can get started sooner rather than later. How do you guys feel about Fincher joining a blockbuster franchise like World War Z? Would you rather see him focusing on something else? Let us know in the comments below!
