It’s
been ages since we’ve seen a Kathryn Bigelow (The Hurt Locker, Zero Dark Thirty) movie in theaters but we’re
getting the return of the Oscar-winning filmmaker this summer. The film, Detroit, is set against the backdrop
against the riots in the Michigan city fifty years ago and we have the first
trailer here for you.
Detroit reveals the awful treatment of
many throughout the riots that were initiated by police officers back in 1967.
The raids all across the city led to the deaths of 39 people which also left
hundreds more wounded in the five-day massacre. It seems that the movie will be
told from many different perspectives with John Boyega playing the primary lead
as a black police officer working alongside the predominantly white department.
The trailer as a whole is terrific though and also showcases Will Poulter and
Jason Mitchell in their roles. Detroit
looks to be a visceral thrill ride that is very much real and reminds me a bit
of how I felt when I saw Patriots Day earlier this year. As a big fan of
Bigelow’s collaborations with writer, Mark Boal, who worked with her on both The Hurt Locker and Zero Dark Thirty, it seems they might have another film on their
hands drama that will garner awards praise.

The movie stars Boyega, Poulter, Mitchell, John Krasinski. Jacob Latimore,
Anthony Mackie, Ben O’Toole, Jack Reynor, Jeremy Strong and Kaitlyn Dever. The
movie hits theaters on August 4th, the 50th anniversary
in which the riots began.
