Netflix
continues to stockpile projects for their streaming service and today is no
exception. According to Deadline,
Netflix has given a 10-episode order to a currently untitled horror series from
Mike Flanagan (Ouija: Origin of Evil,
Hush) based on the novel, The
Haunting of Hill House.
The
1959 novel of the same name is widely considered one of the best ghost stories
of the 20th century. The rights were picked up by Steven Spielberg’s
Amblin TV who is also collaborating with Paramount TV and Flanagan has been
chosen to write, direct and executive produce the adaptation. The book has already
been adapted for the big screen twice in 1963 and 1999, both titled The Haunting with the latter starring
Liam Neeson, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Owen Wilson. I’ve seen the 1999 version
and to be honest, it’s one of the worst feature films I’ve ever seen; having
said that, I think the plot is incredibly interesting and would work much
better in a television format. Also, with an auteur like Flanagan helming the
show, it’s in much better hands to tell the story that could properly be told
for horror fans everywhere.
This
will be the third Netflix series coming from Paramount TV joining the recent
budding teen drama, 13 Reasons Why
which is quickly becoming one of the hottest shows around but their next
project could be a goldmine as well titled, Maniac,
helmed by Cary Fukunaga and starring Jonah Hill and Emma Stone. Hopefully we
get more updates on the Netflix series including casting and a possible shoot
date. When those details are brought to our attention, we’ll be sure to post
them right here on Cinema Wave!
