Fede
Alvarez (Don’t Breathe, 2013’s Evil Dead) seems to be one of the best
blossoming filmmakers in Hollywood right now. Though he’s strictly worked in
the horror genre thus far, he’s recently been tapped to direct The Girl in the Spider’s Web, continuing
Lisbeth Salander’s story following 2011’s The
Girl with the Dragon Tattoo that starred Rooney Mara and was directed by
David Fincher. Alvarez will take the reins of that franchise and will also helm
a reboot of another cult classic. According to Deadline,
Alvarez will direct a reboot of Labyrinth,
a 1986 fantasy film that starred the late, David Bowie.
There
have been talks of this movie for years and it was in question whether it would
be a reboot or a sequel but it seems the studio has settled on the former with
Alvarez directing. Producers have stressed that the new take on Labyrinth won’t be a remake, rather a
spinoff with a new story rather than a sequel. Jim Henson, the creator of The Muppets directed the original just
before he tragically passed away in 1990. I’ve unfortunately never seen the
original so I can’t comment on being upset over them touching the property so
soon after Bowie’s passing but it does seem a bit soon. I’m a big fan of
Alvarez though and am positive he can bring his own flare to his own version of
the beloved cult classic.
