It
seems that musicals are back and bigger than ever playing off of the success of
recent Best Picture nominee, La La Land
but what about music biopics? Just as popular, if not more, The
Playlist is reporting that there is one in development following The Kinks.
The movie will be based on the stage musical based on the band titled Sunny Afternoon that ran from 2014-2016.
The
band is best known for songs like “You Really Got Me”, “All Day and All of the
Night”, “Lola” and “Waterloo Sunset” and is a unique project especially with
the talent involved behind the camera. Dexter Fletcher (Eddie the Eagle, Sunshine on Leith) will direct the project with
Joe Penhall (The Road, Mindhunter)
set to write the script. As a fan of the band and talent behind it, I’m very
excited for this film to get going. Some musical biopics take longer than
others in development, namely Clint Eastwood’s movie adaptation of the stage
musical, Jersey Boys was in
development for almost ten years before it was made, but I have high hopes for
this film.
What do
you guys think about the announcement of a film covering the Kinks? Do you
think Sunny Afternoon will be a good
follow-up for Fletcher following Eddie
the Eagle? Comment below and let us know your thoughts.
