Mary Poppins Returns continues to
bolster its cast. The upcoming sequel to the classic Disney musical will be
directed by Rob Marshall (Into the Woods,
Chicago) and already stars Emily
Blunt as Poppins and rising sensation and star of the Broadway darling Hamilton, Lin-Manuel Miranda. But today,
they added a legendary actress to the film.
According
to Variety,
19-time Oscar nominated actress Meryl Streep has joined the movie playing the
role of Mary Poppins’ cousin, Topsy who was not in the original 1964
adaptation. The sequel will take place in Depresseion-era London and follows a
now-grown Jane and Michael Banks, who along with Michael’s three children, are
visited by the enigmatic Mary Poppins (played by Blunt) after a personal loss.
Through her magical skills and help of her friend Jack (Miranda), she helps the
family rediscover the wonder in their lives.
Streep
is expected to sing in the film along with Blunt and Miranda but so far, this
cast is fantastic. I’m interested to see who else they add as the cast for Into the Woods was stacked. It’s an
enticing property and I’m eager to see who else they bring in to join the
sequel to an absolute classic. Streep will be seen next in Florence Foster Jenkins next month.
