It
appears that most outlets were wrong on who Depp will be playing in the
Wizarding World after all. According to Collider,
he will be cast in Fantastic Beasts and
Where to Find Them 2 as Gellert Grindelwald, former friend of Albus
Dumbledore.
It
was originally reported that Depp was in the running to play a younger
Dumbledore but David Yates, the director of Fantastic
Beasts and the upcoming sequel said that they chose Depp to play a pivotal
role because they wanted to “go for the most inspired, interesting, right fit
for that character. Johnny Depp is a real artist.” It’s true that Depp has had
many transformative roles in his career including Jack Sparrow, Edward
Scissorhands, Willy Wonka and the Mad Hatter to name a few, most wouldn’t have
been able to see him within the Harry Potter universe, however. Now, he will
play one of its most iconic characters.
Depp
is only the first new addition as Yates and author, J.K. Rowling are in the
process of auditioning for younger Dumbledore. How do you guys feel about
Johnny Depp playing Grindelwald? Write in the comments and let us know!
