Well
this one was waiting in the wings for a while…According to The
Playlist, Rami Malek is set to play Freddie Mercury in the long-awaited
biopic on the band Queen titled, Bohemian
Rhapsody. This project has been in the inner workings of Hollywood for
years and originally had Sacha Baron Cohen in the lead role but he dropped out
a little under a year ago due to creative differences.
Rami
Malek, who’s best known for his Emmy-winning role on the USA Network drama, Mr. Robot is getting his first real shot
at a leading role on the big screen with this biopic about arguably one of the
best rock bands of all-time. He’s been seen in spot parts in other features
like the Night at the Museum
franchise and Short Term 12 but
nothing to the multitude of playing a legendary rock star.
In
addition to the casting news, the film has also brought on Bryan Singer to direct.
Singer is best known for directing most of the X-Men film franchise but he’s also done non-blockbuster filmmaking
with Valkyrie and one of my favorite
movies of all-time, The Usual Suspects.
Anthony McCarten, who wrote and produced the Oscar-nominated film, The Theory of Everything is set to write
the script.
I’m a
big fan of both choices to star and direct. Though I think Cohen would’ve been
a great choice for Mercury, I believe that Malek can bring something very
different to the role. What do you guys think? Do you think Rami Malek is the
right choice to play the front man of Queen? Comment and let us know!
