In terms of originality, Dope was one of the better indie flicks
that took advantage of an original idea. Marvel is known for hiring lower level
indie directors to take over their franchise titles and it seems by DC’s latest
hire, they might be following the same formula. According to Deadline,
DC has hired Rick Famuyiwa (Dope) to
direct The Flash in 2018.
Not
much is known about the DC film other than it will follow Barry Allen and his
origin story. The role of Allen will be played by Ezra Miller who was first
seen in the DC Extended Universe (DCEU) this past March in Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice. Miller has been in high
profile indie titles such as We Need to
Talk About Kevin and The Perks of
Being a Wallflower.
Famuyiwa
has had success as of late not only with the 2015 release of Dope, but he recently directed HBO film,
Confirmation starring Kerry
Washington and is receiving Emmy consideration for his direction.
The Flash is set to be released on March
16th, 2018.
