One of the most successful Broadway musicals of
all-time finally will have a film adaptation with a Holiday release date.
According to Collider,
Wicked, which follows the Witches of
Oz before the events of The Wizard of Oz is set to be released on December 20th,
2019. The potential blockbuster has been slated at a perfect date around Christmas
time when so many families head to the theater.
Wicked follows the story of the young
witches Elphaba and Glinda when they’re young as they go from enemies to
friends and back again amidst all the magic of Oz. When the musical debuted
back in 2003, it was a tremendous success. The musical won three Tony Awards
including Best Musical Actress for Idina Menzel, who is also known for voicing
Elsa in Disney’s Frozen and playing
Maureen Johnson for the film and Broadway versions of the musical, Rent.
There
is also a fantastic director attached as Stephen Daldry (Billy Elliot, The Reader)
is set to direct the musical adaptation. No news on cast yet, but wouldn’t it
be exciting to see Menzel reprise her original role as Elphaba in the movie?
