Most young adult novel
adaptations don’t formulate for the best results on screen. Though, The Hunger Games was a massive box
office success, other titles like The
Maze Runner, the Divergent series
and most recently, The 5th
Wave haven’t done well in theaters; yet this newest adaptation might be our
best attempt at another successful franchise.
Per The
Hollywood Reporter, Doug Liman (Edge of Tomorrow, Mr.
and Mrs. Smith) is set to direct Chaos
Walking. The thing that separates this from past efforts
though is that the script is written by Oscar-winning screenwriter, Charlie
Kaufman (Adaptation, Eternal
Sunshine of the Spotless Mind). Robert
Zemeckis was previously attached to direct the movie.
The
story takes place in a world where all living creatures can hear
other’s thoughts through images, words and sounds called “Noise”. It sounds
like an interesting premise to say the least and it’ll add more of a thriller
element to the YA genre. With a script from Kaufman, it adds even more mystery
and suspense to the upcoming project.
The
big question is with this film being added onto Liman’s already loaded plate
that includes Mena starring Tom
Cruise, Domhnall Gleeson and Jesse Plemons, which is due out in January 2017; The Wall starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson
which is in pre-production and then projects like Luna Park also starring Cruise, where does superhero flick Gambit come into play? The movie has
already been pushed multiple times due to problems with the lead actor Channing
Tatum, script issues and the studio not being satisfied. It seems at this point
that Gambit will not be released any
time soon.
