Oscar-nominated
actor Barkhad Abdi was an unknown before auditioning to play a Somali pirate in
Captain Phillips back in 2013. His
dirty, instinctive portrayal led to him not only getting an Oscar nomination,
but also a Golden Globe nom as well as winning the BAFTA Award. Now, it seems
Abdi will be taking his talents to a franchise; according to Deadline, Abdi has
been cast in the untitled sequel to Blade
Runner.
There
are no current details on the plot of the film or his character yet but he’s
joining a hell of a cast set for the sequel of the 1982 classic. He will be
joining Harrison Ford, Ryan Gosling, Robin Wright, Ana de Armas and Dave
Bautista in a movie that is heavy on everyone’s radar. Denis Villenueve (Prisoners, Sicario) is set to direct the movie which is set to be released on
January 12th, 2018.
Abdi
was last seen alongside Helen Mirren and Aaron Paul in Eye in the Sky back in March. He will next be seen later this year
in Where the White Man Runs Away with
Al Pacino and Extortion.
