One
of the biggest films of the 80s and especially Tom Cruise’s career has to be Top Gun. The 1986 flick based on a US
Navy fighter pilots grossed $344 million worldwide on a $15 million budget
which means it should’ve absolutely warranted a sequel. Now, according to Variety,
30 years later, Top Gun 2 is in the
works and Joseph Kosinski (Oblivion, TRON:
Legacy) is being eyed to direct.
Kosinski
will reunite with Cruise, who starred in 2013’s Oblivion and will be the seventh director to collaborate with the
actor for two or more films. Though Top
Gun 2 has been long-in-development, Cruise did confirm that it will be
happening and will shoot next year after he’s done filming Mission: Impossible 6. Not only that, but Variety also reports that
the movie will be “set in a world where drone technology and fifth generation
fighters and explore the end of an era of dogfighting which made the original
film so exhilarating”. Sources say that the main reason Kosinski is being
coveted to direct is because it was his vision for the sequel that got the
wheels moving (no pun intended). Oh and by the way, yes, Val Kilmer is back
reprising his role of Iceman opposite Cruise’s Maverick.
Kosinski
is an interesting choice to direct but I think it will be right for the plot
they’re going for. I liked TRON: Legacy
more than most people but never saw Oblivion
so I’ll have to watch soon to see how he works with Cruise. His next directed
film, Granite Mountain, a
firefighting drama that stars Miles Teller, Josh Brolin and Jeff Bridges hits
theaters on October 20th. What do you guys think? Will Kosinski
steer Top Gun 2 in the right direction? Let us know what you think in the
