Sony
announced only a couple of months ago that they would be making a Venom movie to be released in 2018 and
now, we have a star and director attached. According to Deadline,
Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland, Gangster
Squad) will direct the R-rated comic book movie with Oscar-nominee, Tom
Hardy portraying Eddie Brock.
This
is a huge get for Sony as they jumpstart their own new Marvel Universe from
their catalogue of characters. The lead character of Eddie Brock is able to
converse and have a relationship with a symbiote which latches to him becoming
the villainous, Venom. Hardy is one of the best actors working in Hollywood
today and is also a massive Venom fan. He was originally cast as Rick Flagg in
DC’s Suicide Squad but had to drop
out of the production due to The Revenant
filming schedule going over its original end date. I think Hardy will due a
tremendous job and though I believe that Fleischer’s Gangster Squad is atrocious, Zombieland
is one of my favorite comedies of the 2000s and includes great moments of
action as well.
Hardy
can be seen next in Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk
and also has a ton of other projects in development like Mad Max: The Wasteland, Josh Trank’s Fonzo and Splinter Cell. Venom begins production this Fall and
has a release date of October 5th, 2018.
