Just
about a month after this past year’s Oscars and studios are already starting to
make their pushes for next year’s Academy Awards. One film that could be a
surprise contender is Breathe, the
directorial debut of motion capture legend Andy Serkis. The film stars recent
Oscar nominee, Andrew Garfield and Claire Foy, the rising star of the Netflix
series, The Crown.
Breathe
follows Robin, played by Garfield, a young and adventurous young man who is
tragically paralyzed with polio. Against his wishes, his wife, Diana brings him
home and devotes her time to help with recovery with his disability. It sounds
a lot like what we had seen with the Stephen Hawking biopic, The Theory of Everything which led Eddie
Redmayne to an Oscar and the Academy often praises performances that feature
actors dealing with a constricting condition. The talent involved and plot make
it seem like a proper awards vehicle and I’m excited to see a trailer.
Andrew
Garfield is coming off of two magnificent performances as Desmond Doss in the
Mel Gibson-directed war movie, Hacksaw
Ridge and as Rodrigues in Martin Scorsese’s Silence. In addition to Breathe,
which will be released on October 27th, he also will star in David
Robert Mitchell’s (Don’t Breathe)
sophomore film titled Under the Silver
Lake. Foy is currently filming Season 2 of The Crown in which she stars as Queen Elizbeth II. Check out the image above for Breathe!
