After the American remake of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo was released in 2011 starring Rooney Mara and Daniel Craig, it seems that Sony Pictures is moving along with the next reboot that will follow the book series written by Stieg Larsson. According to Buzzfeed, The Girl in the Spider’s Web will be the focus of the next film in the well-known international book series and Fede Alvarez (Don’t Breathe, Evil Dead) will direct.

It’s an interesting move for the studio six years after the original, especially to reboot but Alvarez could be the perfect director for the tone of the adapted book series. Variety has reported that Natalie Portman and Scarlett Johansson are among the actresses being considered for the lead of Lisbeth Salander. Fincher casted Mara in the role after working with her in The Social Network and was in a constant battle with the studio to select an actress with more star power. He proved them wrong clearly after Mara was nominated for her first Oscar for her performance as Salander. No word on who the studio is looking to cast as Mikael Blomkvist in the movie as of now.

The studio first offered the role to Alicia Vikander but she has an incredibly busy schedule and turned down the role. Alvarez also has Don’t Breathe 2 in development, the follow-up to his widely-successful horror film from last year. The Girl in the Spider’s Web plans to start production in September to make it to an October 5th, 2018 release date.
