Many
have been wondering what has been up with the Escape from New York remake that 20th Century Fox won
the rights for back in 2015, and now, we have more details about the film and
where it’s at production wise. According to Deadline,
Robert Rodriguez (Grindhouse, Sin City)
will direct the remake of the classic 1981 film that starred Kurt Russell and
was directed by John Carpenter.
Escape from New York follows Snake
Plissken, an eyepatch-wearing tough SOB who is given the task of saving the
President of the United States after Air Force One crashes in New York. The
special forces operative has just under 24 hours to save the President and find
a tape that holds the key to peace. If he fails on the mission, he’s wired to
explode. Rodriguez is a perfect choice to helm the remake and is friends with the
director of the original, Carpenter. Rodriguez has experience with directing
hyper-violent action flicks and he should do a great job adapting this iconic
property for new audiences.
Rodriguez
is currently working on post-production for his next film, Alita: Battle Angel. The film is based on the graphic novels of the
same name that were written by James Cameron and Laeta Kalogridis. It’s set to
be released on July 20th, 2018 and has a terrific cast that
headlined by Rosa Salazar, Christoph Waltz, Jennifer Connelly and recent Oscar
winner, Mahershala Ali.
